History

Vandever Lofts began its life as the Downtown home of Vandevers Department Store, one of Tulsa’s best-known early retailers. William Vandever recalled that the family built its new Downtown department store at Fifth and Boston in 1920, although some later property records date the building to 1924. For that reason, we describe the building as dating to the early 1920s.
Vandevers grew into a full-line department store where Tulsans could shop for everything from fashion and jewelry to appliances and everyday clothing. As Tulsa expanded beyond Downtown, the company expanded with it. Vandevers opened a store at Utica Square in 1957, and the company also operated at Southroads. The Tulsa Historical Society and Museum remembers Vandevers as “The Store With Everything”, with locations Downtown, at Utica Square, and at Southroads.
The Downtown building eventually found a new purpose. A residential redevelopment completed around 2014 created 40 apartments within the historic structure.
Since acquiring Vandever Lofts, we have continued that evolution. Five additional apartments were created inside the historic skybridge that once connected the two Vandever department store buildings, bringing the property to 45 residences. We also added a second-floor fitness center, lounge, and amenity space. Today, the former department store offers a different way to experience Downtown while keeping an important piece of Tulsa’s retail history in use.
