History

The Adams Building was constructed in 1927-28 by Tulsa entrepreneur I. S. “Ike” Mincks as the Mincks Hotel, timed to capitalize on visitors coming to Tulsa for the 1928 International Petroleum Exposition. Mincks, who also owned Mecca Coffee Company, created a building that quickly became known for its elaborate terra cotta exterior. After a 1935 liquidation sale, the property changed owners and became known as the Adams Hotel.

Its ornate facade, combining Gothic, Italian Renaissance, and Baroque influences, remains one of the building’s defining features. The Mincks-Adams Hotel was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The building later transitioned to office use around 1980.

Our historic rehabilitation transformed the property into 65 apartments while preserving much of its original character. Historic terra cotta, lobby tile, light fixtures, stairs, elevators, masonry, and marble windowsills were among the features preserved or repaired during the certified rehabilitation. A local artist spent approximately 18 months recreating and restoring terracotta tiles by hand, while custom molds were created for missing exterior details, including parapet caps, capitals, and lamps. Original lobby and floor tiles were retained, and the historic “Adams Hotel” lettering was repainted to read “Adams Apartments.”

The result is a place where Tulsa history is not simply preserved. It remains part of everyday life.
